Watch: Pretty Lights produced his own vinyl records then sampled them for his new album “A Color Map of the Sun” including new track [VIDEO]Posted in Bangin, Chill, Video by nick | Tags: Makes on vinyl, New Album, pretty lights
Derek Vincent Smith aka electronic producer Pretty Lights has been busy truly carving his unique method of production over the past few years. It includes sampling old vinyl records by remixing and arranging them into completely unique modern sounding productions. He has self released a string of impressive albums and EP’s all completely for free, gaining him quite an impressive fanbase worldwide.
2 years ago Derek began more then impressive task of creating his newest album by using samples that he had created instead of vinyl hunting. In 2011 he started working and recording musicians from all over the world then actually pressing this recordings sessions all to vinyl records. He pressed all these recordings to build a personal vinyl collection so he could replicate his style he had crafted, but end with something 100% his own. The long awaited album A Color Mapping of the Sun, will be seeing a release on July 2nd. He will be releasing it for free like all his past releases, as well as through iTunes and physically on limited Vinyl and CD.
The video in his words:
“The first half of this video is part of a track from the Live Studio Sessions recordings. The second half is the song that was made from sampling the first recording. The purpose of the video is to show the production process of the album; homemade vinyl + modular synthesis.”
Here we have the full audio track of the first part of the video.

The music video is easily one of his best to date, filled with countless visual effects giving it that certain untouchable edge. It has some frames showing Derick getting his own original vinyls pressed from musicians he recorded all over the country, then sampling the vinyl on his computer for that unique warmness. He is creating a documentary to compliemnt the album to show how unique the process really was, see the trailer for the documentary below. This is one of the songs that is so good you end up replaying the second it is done. This song is available for free download like all of Pretty Lights music. Pretty Lights has climbed his way to one of the top electronic acts in the country, yet has only in the past 2 years been playing massive EDC, Electric Zoo, and Ultra Music Festivals. Well this past weekend he let loose his soulful beats on Miami knocking them down to their knees. He played an incredible mix of his older tracks and some of the new unreleased tracks off his long awaited next album. He sounded like no one else at Ultra and managed to leave everyone who witnessed his set blown away. Enjoy!

Pretty Lights just dropped off his latest song “The Day Is Gone” complete with a a video recap of his New Years Eve shows in New York this past year taking place at the historical Roseland Ballroom. He manages to convey such soul and emotion in each in every one of his songs almost making most other artists feel very fake and artificial. The gritty bass heavy edge clashes with the soulful vocals in all the right ways. This looks like quite the party to remember. Enjoy!

…..No Daft Punk. The lineup just got released for the most buzzed about festival in the country, Coachella Music & Art Festival. The legendary festival which takes place in the sunny Indigo Valley, California every year expanded to two weekends last year to accommodate the incredibly high demand. The 2013 festival will be taking place over April 12th – 14th and April 19th – 21st.
Tickets go on sale Tuesday, January 29th at 10am PST.
So there is no Daft Punk.. yet again. I guess we were silly for letting our hopes get up once again. But there is a reunion from Wu-Tang Clan, which is more then dope. Also confirmed is the much speculated reunion of Ben Gibbard electronic project The Postal Service. Of course Red Hot Chili Peppers will be incredible, but didn’t they just play every festival last year? Phoenix is an incredible band, so that’s awesome to see them headline. All in all for Coachella standards I would say the headliners are a tad weak, and they have definitely shifted more towards live acts again. Make sure to read the small text because there defintely is a the stacked lineup of everyone underneath the headliners.
In the electronic spectrum we have Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Knife Party, Benny Benassi, TNGHT, Eric Prydz, Dog Blood (Skrillex + Boys Boize), Major Lazer, Disclosure, Hardwell, Kill the Noise, Wolfgang Gartner, Nicky Romero, Excision and that’s just a handful.
In the hip-hop world, besides Wu-Tang Clan we have 2 Chainz, Danny Brown, Jurassic 5, Pusha T, and Earl Sweatshirt.
What is everyone’s thoughts?
The Governors Ball NYC Music Festival 2013 Full Lineup : Impressive Lineup Including 50+ Acts on Randall’s Island, New YorkPosted in Bangin, Events, News by nick | Tags: Concert, kanye west, Music Festival, New York City, NYC, pretty lights, The Governors Ball
As the the year continues to kick off we get another incredible lineup for one of the summer’s biggest parties in America. The Governors Ball takes place every year in New York City at Randall’s Island, an actual island. The festival is taking place over the weekend of June 6th, 7th, and 8th. It seems to always have a massive lineup filled with big headliners to some of the best buzzing upcomers. The Ball’s lineup tends to be a great mixture of everything hip. From a great balance of hip-hop, electronic, indie, blues, folk, and other live acts. It seems to be a great alternative for those in the North East not looking to make the nationwide trek.
This lineup is insane. Not an event to miss for anyone within range!

It already been announced that the massive 3 day long Colorado snow music festival SnowBall had relocated from the Vail area to Winter Park for 2013. The festival has always had one of the freshest most diverse lineups not just in Colorado but on the West coast. They have consistently had a great blend of the hottest new electronic, live band, and hip-hop acts all at the same festival to enjoy while freezing your ass off. Well now for the big switch of locations, this lineup completely makes up for the move. The headliners include past attendee Colorado electronic icon Pretty Lights who knows how to shut a festival down. STS9 makes their highly anticipated debut Snow festival appearance which is sure to be one to remember. Rowdytown headliner, fellow Colorado Native Big Gigantic are set to unleash their new stage setup. The man bringing real hip-hop back to American mainstream… Kendrick Lamar. One of our favorite rising Electro stars Porter Robinson is set to have a epic headlining performance. Datsik will probably drop bass louder then you have ever heard.. literally. Flying Lotus is one of the most intelligent producers and will take you too another world with his future sounding productions. The collaboration project between GRiZ and Gramatik aka Grizmatik will be performing their first official festival performance with live production. And those are only the headliners playing the festival, look above / below at the rest of the jaw dropping lineup. These are more then enough reason to rage in the freezing snow for 3 days for an unforgettable weekend filled with snow and music. Hope to see everyone out in the snow this year!

Pretty Lights live is certainly something special, I remember seeing Pretty Lights at his first Red Rocks show and walking away knowing I’d seen one of the best shows in my entire life. Well he’s made playing the historic Red Rocks Amphitheater a annual tradition, and this year for his third time playing he made the occasion two days long. This video features his newly released leak off his upcoming album “So Bright” featuring vocals from Eligh, and even shows some footage of Eligh playing live with PL at the Red Rocks shows. There’s a very cool scene with showing Derek (Pretty Lights) smoking multiple blunts with some members of the Pretty Lights Music cast (Michal Menert, Break Science, Gramatik). Another great video by RadioEditAV. Enjoy!

Pretty Lights has been locking himself away any chance he’s not playing some massive festival, and has been working on his biggest project to date, an album featuring all original samples recorded from muscians that he has found. We already got the first sample with “You Get High” and “We Must Go On” and “I Know The Truth” might be on the allbum. Well here’s “So bright”, a track that starts out slow before building up to a glitchy melodic anthem filled with some distored vocals. The vocals are from Eligh of Living Legends, are pack so much emotion while being so distorted. It’s a song that paints a story, and I can’t stop replaying it. I can’t wait to hear the rest of his upcoming album. Download coming soon, enjoy the stream for now! UPDATE: Download added!
Excerpt from Derek : “All the samples used in the track are from self composed one of a kind vinyl pressings. There is a short documentary to be released soon about the making of this upcoming PL album because it was a very unique and laborious process. I’m insanely excited to release the entire record but… I’d prefer to do it on my own terms:). Much love to all PL family, I hope you enjoy the track.”

Here’s the next batch of live sets from Electric Daisy Carnival 2012 Las Vegas, the 300,000 person electronic festival featuring some of the biggest names in all sub genres of electronic music. Check out PART 1 of the EDC live set series featuring Steve Aoki + Afrojack, Datsik, Benny Benassi, Chuckie. We made sure these were the highest quality mp3s so you could blast them everywhere, but we do apologize for the occasional announcer in a few of the sets, we can’t fully control everything. Turn up the bass for all these, stay tuned for parts 3-5. Enjoy!
Well first up is Colorado favorite Pretty Lights, who played a truly monumental set on the main stage right before David Guetta and Avicii. He busts everything out from his groovey funk tracks to the heavy dubstep BANGERS and everything in between.

Lastly Borgore hits us with some of the heaviest, grossest sounding dubstep I’ve heard in awhile. He never disappoints with so many originals, remixes, bootlegs, and more that are sure to rattle your subs. Don’t miss his notable “Smell Yo Dick” bootleg that is sure to make you smile.
