Pretty Lights – A Color Map Of the Sun Remixes (Album) : Must Hear Release With 16 Artists [ALBUM STREAM]Posted in Bangin, Chill, Mixtapes / Albums by nick | Tags: A Color Map of the Sun, Bass Music, Electro Soul, pretty lights, Remixes, Thissongissick
Pretty Lights has been one of the few electronic artists to never dive into the world of having other artists remix his songs, so when I heard that he was enlisting an all star cast for official remixes for the first time ever, for every track on his most recent album nonetheless, I almost lost it. On December 10th, the 16 track A Color Map Of the Sun Remixes album will release through Pretty Light Music for free and iTunes.
Today we get our the stream of the entire album with artists ranging from expected PLM favorites like Break Science, Michal Menert, SuperVision, Paul Basic and Elliot Lipp to unexpected bass heavyweights 12th Planet and Datsik. He has also enlisted a cast of some of the hottest new names in electronic music GRiZ, ODESZA, heRobust, Opiuo, Blood Diamonds, Culprate, Two Fresh and more. The entire release is very eclectic and gives the album a completely new spin. For those waiting to hear your favorite Pretty Lights songs in a whole new light, the wait is over. My personal favorites might have to be ODESZA’s take on ‘One Day They’ll Know’, the GRiZ spin on ‘Vibe Vendetta’ both personally competing with the originals for me. You can stream the entire album below thanks to Rolling Stone for premiering it and the Pretty Lights team for letting us feature it. Enjoy.

While many of us were out and about enjoying the first night of the weekend, an unexpected exchange of disses took place over Twitter between two very unlikely sources. The second show of Pretty Lights massive fall tour promoting Derek’s successful “A Color Map of the Sun” album took place in St. Louis last night and featured Fools Gold Records hip-hop lyricist Danny Brown. Danny, who is running fresh off the release of his highly acclaimed “Old” album, took to Twitter promptly after performing with these tweets:
UPDATE: After doing some digging, we’ve heard that Danny was heckled throughout his set by Pretty Lights fans. He reacted by yelling and throwing his mic into the crowd after they were unresponsive throughout his performance.
As word spread about Danny’s comments, Pretty Lights took to his fans in the wee hours of the morning to share this:
These words apparently didn’t sit well with Danny who responded by saying this about tonights performance in Nashville:
Though we are unsure if Danny Brown has officially been pulled off of Pretty Light’s Nashville bill for tonight, Derek attempted to squash the beef early this morning:
This is a very unfortunate series of events for two artists we both really respect. Sometimes combining the electronic and hip-hop worlds just doesn’t align as planned. We wish the best to both artists.
Must Watch: Pretty Lights Live Band Light Show Debut at Red Rocks video and new song “Give Your Love Away “Posted in Bangin, News, Video by nick | Tags: 2013, Laser Show, Light Show, Live Band, pretty lights, Production, Recap, Red Rocks, Video
Pretty Lights played his annual 2 night Red Rocks concerts this summer, yet this year changed things significantly by introducing the world to his full live band that accompanied him while playing to alongside a jaw dropping fully custom light and laser show and he just released an official video recap featuring a new song. The group features his past drummer Adam Deitch who is currently also drumming for Break Science and Lettuce. The group also features keyboardist Brian Coogan (New Orleans All-Star), keyboardist Borahm Lee (Break Science), Scott Flynn (John Brown’s Body) and on trombone and Eric Bloom (Lettuce). Both Deitch and Coogan played extensively on Pretty Lights recent incredible album A Color Map of the Sun
It was really a truly unique and amazing experience to witness live music and electronic music fused together like never before. The stage was structured to highlight 4 sections for the live musicians and Derick in them middle acting as the conductor for the revolutionary combination elements. In the words of Derek himself:
My dream has come true. I will be hitting the road for my 2013 fall tour with a FULL, AWESOME LIVE BAND! We will be fusing new, hot production with the live band’s gritty old school hip-hop soul break styles in a way that production and a live band have never been heard together before. “
This recap is done to the soundtrack of “Give Your Love Away”, a brand new Pretty Lights tune, that is great.

The long wait is over, we finally get the next full length album from Pretty Lights, the musical project of Colorado based Derek Vincent Smith. A Color Map of the Sun takes a completely different approach to music creation. Derek went across the country working with incredible muscians recording his own collection of vinyls. He then he used his collection of vinyls to sample from to give his signature electronic twist. The result is an true work of art from start to finish. The amount of emotion and soul contained in this album is unlike any other electronic album I have heard, besides possibly Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. It is an album after listening to the full thing, I immediately find myself wanting to play it from the beginning again. This is something that will stand the test of time and gain Pretty Lights an even larger fan base.
Like all of his music he has made it the entire thing available completely for free. But he has also printed hard copies on CD and Vinyl, which are available here. He has also made it available on iTunes and Beatport.

Derek Vincent Smith aka electronic producer Pretty Lights has been busy truly carving his unique method of production over the past few years. It includes sampling old vinyl records by remixing and arranging them into completely unique modern sounding productions. He has self released a string of impressive albums and EP’s all completely for free, gaining him quite an impressive fanbase worldwide.
2 years ago Derek began more then impressive task of creating his newest album by using samples that he had created instead of vinyl hunting. In 2011 he started working and recording musicians from all over the world then actually pressing this recordings sessions all to vinyl records. He pressed all these recordings to build a personal vinyl collection so he could replicate his style he had crafted, but end with something 100% his own. The long awaited album A Color Mapping of the Sun, will be seeing a release on July 2nd. He will be releasing it for free like all his past releases, as well as through iTunes and physically on limited Vinyl and CD.
The video in his words:
“The first half of this video is part of a track from the Live Studio Sessions recordings. The second half is the song that was made from sampling the first recording. The purpose of the video is to show the production process of the album; homemade vinyl + modular synthesis.”
Here we have the full audio track of the first part of the video.

He is creating a documentary to compliemnt the album to show how unique the process really was, see the trailer for the documentary below. Pretty Lights has climbed his way to one of the top electronic acts in the country, yet has only in the past 2 years been playing massive EDC, Electric Zoo, and Ultra Music Festivals. Well this past weekend he let loose his soulful beats on Miami knocking them down to their knees. He played an incredible mix of his older tracks and some of the new unreleased tracks off his long awaited next album. He sounded like no one else at Ultra and managed to leave everyone who witnessed his set blown away. Enjoy!

Pretty Lights just dropped off his latest song “The Day Is Gone” complete with a a video recap of his New Years Eve shows in New York this past year taking place at the historical Roseland Ballroom. He manages to convey such soul and emotion in each in every one of his songs almost making most other artists feel very fake and artificial. The gritty bass heavy edge clashes with the soulful vocals in all the right ways. This looks like quite the party to remember. Enjoy!

…..No Daft Punk. The lineup just got released for the most buzzed about festival in the country, Coachella Music & Art Festival. The legendary festival which takes place in the sunny Indigo Valley, California every year expanded to two weekends last year to accommodate the incredibly high demand. The 2013 festival will be taking place over April 12th – 14th and April 19th – 21st.
Tickets go on sale Tuesday, January 29th at 10am PST.
So there is no Daft Punk.. yet again. I guess we were silly for letting our hopes get up once again. But there is a reunion from Wu-Tang Clan, which is more then dope. Also confirmed is the much speculated reunion of Ben Gibbard electronic project The Postal Service. Of course Red Hot Chili Peppers will be incredible, but didn’t they just play every festival last year? Phoenix is an incredible band, so that’s awesome to see them headline. All in all for Coachella standards I would say the headliners are a tad weak, and they have definitely shifted more towards live acts again. Make sure to read the small text because there defintely is a the stacked lineup of everyone underneath the headliners.
In the electronic spectrum we have Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Knife Party, Benny Benassi, TNGHT, Eric Prydz, Dog Blood (Skrillex + Boys Boize), Major Lazer, Disclosure, Hardwell, Kill the Noise, Wolfgang Gartner, Nicky Romero, Excision and that’s just a handful.
In the hip-hop world, besides Wu-Tang Clan we have 2 Chainz, Danny Brown, Jurassic 5, Pusha T, and Earl Sweatshirt.
What is everyone’s thoughts?
