Pretty Lights Shares "Rainbows and Waterfalls" As First Release Of 2017 + Video

Pretty Lights Rainbows and Waterfalls

The day has come for a new Pretty Lights single! Derek Vincent Smith has blessed us with an incredible new track “Rainbows and Waterfalls” as his first official release since “Only Yesterday” in early 2016. His last single was actually his first release in three years following his Grammy-Nominated album A Color Map Of The Sun so it's refreshing to hear new music from one of our favorites. Well the wait was well worth it, and along with this new song he’s dropped a next level new video and announced his New Years Eve shows.

Honestly, it’s rare for us to get excited about music videos, but this video accompanying “Rainbows and Waterfalls” is incredible. Not only are the visual aesthetics captivating, but the video tells a narrative of what seems to be a woman landing from space with a mysterious letter. The movie-quality visuals follows along with the song perfectly.

Pretty Lights has been busy this year with live shows as well as giving fans content to hold them over in between releases with uploads of his live flips from the Episodic Festival shows in addition to mailing fans USBs of unreleased music. This new song comes in the signature Pretty Lights sound we’ve loved for years drawing inspiration from classic soul and funk. He grabs a sample from Shuggie Otis’ 1971 track “Strawberry Letter 23” and builds his ultra smooth instrumentation around it with hip-hop percussion and glitchy sound design leading to a left-field switch up in the song incorporating some more abrasive, laser sounding synths.

In addition to this new song, he’s announced his NYE run which will include two shows at the Fillmore in Detroit and NYE at The Fillmore in Philadelphia. Tickets go on sale Oct 24 here - see dates below. Enjoy!
