MGMT Return With Must-Hear New Album ‘Little Dark Age’

MGMT Little Dark Age

Acid-washed indie rockers MGMT shared their fourth album, Little Dark Age, this morning. The project comes nearly half a decade after their third, self-titled album, which took listeners on a hallucinogenic, borderline odd journey and received mixed reviews.

With over four years to rest and reflect on that album, MGMT takes things in a refreshing new direction with Little Dark Age. The hallucinogenic synth melodies and out-of-this-world production are still there, no doubt, but the group heavily channels a darker synth-pop style with the ten tracks that comprise the release.

MGMT teased this style throughout the past few months, sharing singles “Little Dark Age,” “When You Die” and “Hand It Over,” displaying both production and vocals with considerably more direction than previous releases. The seven tracks that joined these singles this morning drive that idea home.

The album seamlessly weaves between lighthearted pieces such as the cheeky opener track “She Works Out Too Much,” which features VanWyngarden and Goldwasser arguing with a robotic female voice about social media and gym memberships, and more subdued pieces, like the more laidback “James” and “When You’re Small.” MGMT even brings a level of funk on tracks like “TSLAMP” and the instrumental-heavy “Days That Got Away.”

Altogether, Little Dark Age is more likely to have your head bobbing than to have you pondering on what it all means. It’s danceable albeit weird, introspective while not taking itself too seriously, and it’s something that only MGMT could pull off. Check it out below. Enjoy!

MGMT Shares Chill New Single “Hand It Over” Ahead Of Forthcoming Album

mgmt hand it over

Psychedelic indie rock group MGMT kicked off 2018 today with a laidback new single titled “Hand It Over.” The song follows the releases of “When You Die” and “Little Dark Age,” the first tracks from the band in four years and the first two singles off their forthcoming album, Little Dark Age, set to drop in the next month or so.

While the previous two singles showcased a dark new direction for MGMT, “Hand It Over” dials it back to a subdued, dreamy signature reminiscent of the group’s 2010 project Congratulations. The track creates an inviting overall vibe with gentle percussion, warm guitar plucks, faint bass and airy vocal harmonies. Check out the single below and enjoy!

MGMT Shares Psychedelic New Single “When You Die” + Trippy Video

MGMT When You Die

MGMT keeps the new music coming today with psychedelic single “When You Die.” The surreal track follows October’s release of “Little Dark Age,” the first new song in four years from the group and the title track from their forthcoming album, set to drop sometime in early 2018.

“When You Die” maintains a similar darkness to MGMT’s previous single, showcasing a compelling growth from the group. Although the mood of the release appears light with breezy guitar plucks and bouncy percussion, MGMT’s iconic faraway-esque vocals coupled with downright ominous lyrics add a grim new dimension. Similar to “Little Dark Age,” this single also comes with a ridiculously trippy video counterpart with some must-see (albeit a bit gruesome) visual effects about, you guessed it, what happens when you die. Check out both below and enjoy!
