If you're an electronic music fan or even a music fan in general, chances are you've heard of The Chainsmokers. From their breakout single “#SELFIE” to last year’s “Paris,” the duo have changed their sound immensely over the past few years and have taken the world by storm in the process, selling out shows for 20,000+ people and making headline appearances at festivals around the globe.
Today The Chainsmokers are back with yet another single titled “Somebody,” and this time they’ve enlisted Drew Love of rising R&B duo THEY. for some must-hear guest vocals. Their recent songs have had very mixed reviews as they've abandoned their electronic roots focusing on their vocals for an alternative rock sound. However, this time they've gotten some help from one of our favorite vocalists with Drew Love. Composed of Love and Dante Jones, THEY. has become an easy favorite on TSIS, adding their touch on remixes like Charli XCX’s “Boy” and sharing grungy singles like “Thrive” and “Ain’t The Same.”
The strength of “Somebody” lies in its fluid ebb and flow of energy. Love’s striking falsetto takes the reigns from the first note alongside some light piano chords, shortly before Taggart’s lower pitched tone and moodier production takes over. The drop, which draws from glowing synth progressions layered over an abrasive trap-inspired beat, is a nice juxtaposition of The Chainsmokers’ style with something a bit darker. Altogether, the single is a compelling blend of styles and definitely worth a listen. Check out “Somebody” below and enjoy!
