Scottish tech house up-and-comer Ben Hemsley had one of the most talked about sets at Creamfields a couple of weeks back, one of Europe’s biggest electronic music festivals. One of the most buzz-worthy clips from his set was one where he appeared to be moved to tears. He posted it himself with the caption, “I never needed a hug as much as I did in that moment.”
During the breakdown of a melodic, unreleased track, the video shows Hemsley taking in the beautiful scenery of the packed stage he was playing. All caught on film from the booth, he becomes emotional and looks around to find Patrick Topping, who was hosting the stage that day. He then embraces Topping, who comforts him, and then gets the crowd to cheer even louder. It’s a super wholesome moment and it’s no wonder it’s gotten so much attention.

Hemsley addressed what exactly was going on in a series of tweets after so many were asking:
I’ve made tunes since I was 13 and it took me 11 years to play my first creamfields which was an ultimate dream come true. On this video I had a true realisation that all ma heard work had paid of and I get to do what I love for a living. And then when I turned my head I seen Patrick Topping who’s played a huge roll in my career and supported me from the start which made me cry more and then realising me mam and that was there as well after we’d just lost me grandad. Was a lot to take in. All that with the energy from the crowd, and the actual size of it, enough to make me a lanky fat mug cry his eyes out in front of thousands.
Any aspiring artists who have been at it for a while without seeing too much success yet should think about Ben’s story. That hard work may eventually pay off in the end.
