Genre fluid lo-fi tunes are having a huge moment in the music scene right now, and we have two emerging British artists to put on your lo-fi radar. Chalky is building a strong presence as a producer and composer in the lo-fi hip hop space. “Why Do We Run” sees him linking up with British rapper Jevon Ives.
Chalky’s production is at its best in “Why Do We Run”, with layers of silky, jazzy guitar riffing over lush keys. Ives’ smooth rap bars flow in and out of the song, perfectly aligning with the beat and serving as sonic device on its own. The whole instrumentation of the song creates the effect of gentle waves on a beach at midnight. Despite the laidback arrangement of the track, Ives’ lyrics go deep. He talks about coming to terms with the “dark thoughts in [his] head,” and the process of persisting through hard moments in life.
The two are planning on dropping an official music video for the song soon. In the meantime, you can check out this vibey track below. Enjoy!
