KAYTRANADA must have been feeling prophetic when he named his new album, because one thing is certain: we will be listening to Timeless for years to come.
While BUBBA felt like a seamless, groovy club set with bop after bop, this album feels a lot more like 99.9%. Timeless sees KAYTRANADA back in his production bag, with laser focus on his beat making and sample curation. Although this album still has an A-list lineup of featured artists (Childish Gambino, Channel Tres, and Anderson .Paak, to name just a few), it has more instrumental tracks than either of his last albums. The overall vibe of the album is more laidback, but the details and textures of each track are genius.
So far, our standout tracks are “Do 2 Me,” “Dance Dance Dance Dance,” and “Snap My Fingers.” “Do 2 Me” pairs jazzy horns with crisp drums with Anderson .Paak and SiR‘s horny lyrics. Meanwhile, “Dance Dance Dance Dance” features the old-school, bouncy dancehall vibes that Kaytranada first cut his teeth in the industry on. On “Snap My Fingers,” KAYTRA’s signature echoing synth pulses provide the backdrop for PinkPantheress‘ silky vocals. While PinkPantheress is known for her hyperpop, liquid sound, she’s never sounded better than she does over KAYTRA’s smooth R&B production.
Timeless also marks the first time KAYTRA features his own vocals on a track. Originally intended for The Weeknd, KAYTRA told Rolling Stone that he ended up liking his own vocals on “Stepped On” so much that he kept it for himself. The album is all the better for it.
This album is almost guaranteed to top the list of best albums come end of year, so make sure to give it a listen now. You can check it out below. Enjoy!
