It’s been a minute since we’ve received new music from Sam Gellaitry. Although he’s been dropping unofficial beat tapes, we couldn’t help but have eagerly anticipated more. Today our patience paid off – he just dropped not one, but four new songs in the form of an EP. UNDER THE ILLUSION sees the Scottish producer return to his house music roots.
Title track, “UNDER THE ILLUSION,” is a dreamy tune with a bouncy beat, reminiscent of something we’d hear on a Kaytranada track. Meanwhile, on “ALONE,” icy notes of synth and a fantastical melody made up of vocal chops come together to create an exhilarating hyper-pop dance bop. Gellaitry then uses the starry “LIKE THIS/LIKE THAT” interlude track to get our heart rate back to normal before hitting us with the high-octane “THINK I KNOW.” The sonic backbone of this smooth closing song is a staccato piano beat that gives way to a bubbling bass line, acting as a sonic callback to the EP’s opening track. Despite only clocking in at four songs, Gellaitry turns in an impressively cohesive piece of work with UNDER THE ILLUSION.
