We’ve been on pins and needles waiting, and the day is finally here! Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes’ highly anticipated new album, What Kinda Music, has finally arrived via Blue Note Records!
Tom Misch has established himself as a golden-voiced guitar talent with a knack for weaving polished grooves into neo soul jams. Yussef Dayes is an accomplished drummer known for his distinguished skill in the more experimental realm. Together, the two created a genre-bending musical exploration that demonstrates an arrival to a new artistic front for the the two young studs.
The album begins with the title track setting an almost eerie tone to start, with Dayes’ pin-point back beat acting as guiding to hand to match Misch’s crooning vocals and dreamy orchestration. The project continues on its journey, with energy perpetually swirling to and fro. Some tracks like the percussively impressive “Tidal Wave” and the saxophone kissed “Festival,” are catchy segments of ear candy, while others like the psychedelic jams of “Sensational,” “Lift Off,” and the hip-hop honored “Nightrider,” take off across a spectrum ranging from the supple to the transformative. If you still aren’t sold, “I Did It For You” is demonstrative jam that displays Misch and Dayes’ cohesion as musicians, while “Last 100” pulls Tom’s honey-smooth vocals and signature playful jazz guitar licks back to the forefront alongside the lush piano chords.
This album is undoubtedly different than anything we’ve heard from these two in the past, but it is that faithful commitment to exploring new sounds that makes these two UK young-guns such remarkable musicians. Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes boldly break through all expectations on What Kinda Music and we couldn’t be happier with the end product. This album certainly deserves a proper listening, so grab your good headphones and make yourself comfortable, I promise you won’t regret it. Stream the album below and catch the album documentary premiere on youtube with Tom and Yussef at 3 PM EST. Enjoy!
