Thomas Bangalter, also known as one of the two parts of the legendary duo Daft Punk, has been venturing into completely new waters over the last few months. While many recognize Daft Punk for the almost mythical stardom they reached in EDM, Thomas Bangalter hasn’t been afraid to prove himself beyond the limitations of any expectations. After releasing a series of compositions, he’s now ready to reveal his very first orchestral album, Thomas Bangalter: Mythologies.”
For many of us, this isn’t exactly something we would listen to on a daily basis but the raw creativity and musicality is hard to ignore. The idea started when a leading contemporary choreographer approached Thomas to score a ballet using a symphony orchestra. Ironically, while Mythologies might not be suited for the dancefloor, it has been created with the intention of a ballet dance performance.
The whopping 23-track score draws inspiration from Baroque composition and American minimalism. In other words, it’s probably something you’ve never heard before. The album was recorded with Romain Dumas of the Orchestre national Bordeaux Aquitaine, a 55-piece classical orchestra.
This is an obvious departure from the iconic, robotic electronic dance music we all know too well. But there’s a beauty in an artist finding true creative freedom and being able to express themselves in any musical way they see fit. You can check out the full score below. Enjoy!
