Bonobo has been in the music game for over 20 years, but 2022 is looking to be his best year yet.
Not only is he leading the electronic music pack with two GRAMMY nominations, but his next album is also shaping up to be his best yet. Continuing his so far excellent album rollout for Fragments, today Bonobo shared the latest single, “Shadows.”
Citing inspiration from Detroit-style techno, “Shadows” pairs Jordan Rakei’s silky pipes of gold with Bonobo’s hypnotic production. The last three singles from Bonobo have embraced a darker ambiance, and this track is no different. Swells of synth and melodic arpeggios simmer in the depths of “Shadows,” yet never break the tension of the track. They perfectly compliment Rakei’s haunting vocal performance, resulting in a masterfully balanced final product.
Bonobo gave us a closer look at the track:
Shadows was one of the first pieces in place for the new record and working with Jordan was such a joy. We’d spent plenty of time together previously. He’s toured with us and I’m a huge fan of his. He was an easy choice as a collaborator. The instrumental existed as a slow evolving throwback Detroit thing. I had people like Theo Parish and Moodyman in mind when I was making it. It’s been one of my favourites from the new album since day one.
Fragments is set for a release date of January 14, 2022, via Ninja Tune. Until then, check out “Shadows” using the link below. Enjoy!
