John D Robbins was one of the leading figures in the experimental dubstep and bass scenes as early as 2009 as Run DMT. After taking a much needed hiatus from music, the producer has reemerged with a new moniker, deemster. Finally making his return, he teamed up with Gravitas Recordings for the release of his debut EP, Topsail, an ode to Robbins’ initial spirit and inspirations in music.
The new project takes us back to the producer’s roots with notes of trip hop, jungle, turntablism, and breaks, among other styles. deemster uses recordings of guitars, drum sounds, foley, and a vintage drum machine to capture the warmth of the late 90s/early 200s era of electronic production. Topsail is not only inspired by unique concepts and sounds but also serves as an ode to the beautiful, sandy shores of coastal North Carolina where the producer calls home.
