Heavyweight UK duo Disclosure have recently announced their departure from Capitol Records. In celebration of their newfound independence, they’ve surprised the world with the release of their fourth album Alchemy, out via their own Apollo Records imprint.
According to Disclosure, Alchemy “is a celebration of us feeling liberated right now.” The album itself feels free, creatively and a breath of fresh air for a duo that has been at the top of the music scene for quite some time. There are no guest features, no samples, and no frills. Just good music that flows fluidly, spanning different genres and sonic ideas.
The opening track “Looking For Love” is a 90s-inspired four-on-the-floor groove spackled with glistening melodies and textures. Similarly structured tracks like “Go The Distance,” “Simply Won’t Do,” “We Were In Love,” and “Sun Showers” experiment with those club-filled energies and sounds we’ve come to know and love. Their desire to toy with new ideas is also on full display like the atmospheric drum & bass track “Higher Than Ever Before,” the soulful vocal ballad “Someday,” and the ambient synth-laden song “Purify.”
According to Disclosure, “We’re no longer signed to a major record label. We’re not going to tour this record. We can do whatever we like and be super creative.” There’s a refreshing feeling that comes with an artist’s independence and Disclosure have perfectly encapsulated it.
