With every new release he puts out, Dom Dolla jumps up a spot on my list of DJs to see live when this pandemic ends. His latest, “Pump the Breaks,” a guaranteed club weapon, is no exception. This is the first track the Australian DJ has released this year, following the success of 2020’s “Moving Blind”.
“Pump the Breaks” is tech house at its finest, complete with car sound effects, a relentless bass line, and a dark, gritty modular synth riff. Dom’s distorted vocals, a signature touch of his, tell a tongue-in-check story that could either be about his car or a lover.
Dom Dolla tells the story of how this song came to be:
I produced this record specifically to play at the Shrine in LA in early 2020 (which turned out to be a few weeks before the world shut down). It was…partly inspired by my first car, an old Camry that collects dust in Melbourne while I’m away on tour… hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed giving it a rev on the dance floor.
We really can’t wait to dance to this song as part of a live audience, but until then we’ll be playing it on repeat. You can check it out below. Enjoy!
