Ben and Evan, two pre-school best friends from Chicago, have cultivated their love for music (and each other) into a beautiful project they call Gilligan Moss. Currently based in Brooklyn, New York, the electronic artists have landed on ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective imprint, where they plan to release their album, Speaking Across Time, next month. For now, they serve up the second single from the LP, “Upstate Miracle.”
The duo’s sampling of country song, “Bet Your Heart On Me,” establishes the foundation for the rest of the track. Somehow, when tropical house elements begin to layer over the country vocals, it grooves without hesitation. Embracing the fusion of genres, the listener is catapulted into a free-flowing, uplifting dance tune, poised to brighten a rainy day.
Gilligan Moss commented on the writing process, sharing:
‘Upstate Miracle’ is an interpolation of an old country tune called ‘Bet Your Heart on Me.’ It was inspired by a transcendent moment of DJing at a friend’s party upstate, and drove a lot of the energy of the album title, Speaking Across Time. It was originally written with Sofia Kourtesis in mind, but when we flipped through our sample library, this country tune took hold.
