Gorillaz have just surprised us with a brand new single! They released “Baby Queen” early this morning, and it officially makes them 3-for-3 with their album singles. In case you missed it, they announced a new album, Cracker Island, back in early September. “Baby Queen” follows two smashes, “New Gold” with Tame Impala and “Cracker Island” with Thundercat.
“Baby Queen” is the first of the Cracker Island singles not to feature a guest artist. Mastermind Damon Albarn takes center stage on this tune, and he does so brilliantly. Taking on a shoegaze-y sound with fantastical, trippy lyrics, dreamy synths, and a downtempo rhythm, “Baby Queen” is reminiscent of an older era of Gorillaz. We’re loving how Albarn doesn’t try to overdo it here.
The new Gorillaz album, Cracker Island, is set for release on February 24, 2023.
