Kali Uchis is paving her way to become one of the most promising young women in today’s hip-hop world. After making a name for herself three years ago with her breakthrough mixtape Por Fin, Kali has finally released her highly anticipated debut studio album, Isolation.
Kali Uchis surely hasn’t been quiet during these past few years leading up to Isolation. You’ve no doubt heard her hazy, intoxicating vocals on tracks with Tyler, The Creator, Gorillaz, and Miguel, all of which were highlights on the projects by these artists. However, on Isolation, Kali has made it clear that it’s her turn to shine. And shine she does. Isolation plays out like a novel with Kali herself as the main character, each track serving as a different chapter of her personal, romantic life.
Genres have no agency on this album. That being said, it flows together seamlessly, and the production credits on the album will explain why. Kali Uchis recruited some of the best from every corner in the industry to work on Isolation. There’s Romil from Brockhampton, Thundercat, Kevin Parker from Tame Impala, Gorillaz, BadBadNotGood, and Sounwave who works closely with Kendrick and TDE. Separately these producers have very different sounds, but together they somehow make perfect sense. Kali also had killer features by The Internet’s Steve Lacy, Kendrick Lamar collaborator Jorja Smith, and of course Tyler, The Creator.
After only a couple listens, we can confidently say that Isolation is one of the strongest follow ups we’ve seen to mixtape in a minute. Kali Uchis has made a serious statement with this album and we’ll continue to follow her every move. Enjoy!
