What happens when you combine a legendary hip-hop producer with one of the most forward thinking beat makers in the industry? An unexpected, brilliant piece of art. Lunice, most popular for his solo work, along with his infamous TNGHT project with Hudson Mohawke, has joined forces The Alchemist, frequent collaborator with rappers like Joey Bada$$ and Action Bronson. The two dropped a surprise, eight-track EP today, Moving Parts, which is full of otherworldly beats.
The two artists were set up by Dutch clothing brand Patta at the Red Bull studios to create beats for the BC One World Final, the top tier breakdancing competition in the world. The two weren’t on their own, however. “The musicians they gave us access to is ridiculous,” The Alchemist noted, “it would be unfair for us to sit here and say we’re running the show.” The Alchemist is most known for his incredible use of sampling, so his praise here speaks volumes. Add Lunice’s spacey, bass-heavy flair, and the result is a unique, new-school rendition of breakbeats.
The collaboration on Moving Parts is seamless. Neither of the two producers’ styles overtake one another at any point on the EP. At the same time, you can easily pick out who contributed what on each of the eight tracks. Whoever specifically had the idea of taking these two and sticking them together in the studio with a bunch of musicians deserves a medal.
Who knows if Lunice and The Alchemist will come together again in the future, but for now, let’s be thankful that we’re able to feast upon this epic collaboration. Take a listen to the full Moving Parts project right here. We hope you dig it as much as we did. Enjoy!
