We’re celebrating the 40th anniversary of disco legends CHIC’s chart-topping single “Le Freak” with a bass-heavy house remix from Oliver Heldens. Heldens infuses his groovy house style with the funky, upbeat songwriting and production of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards to reinvigorate this late 70’s classic. With the future house artist having rinsed the track in recent shows, Oliver Heldens’ remix is now officially out courtesy of Big Beat Records.
“I have always been a fan of disco music, and CHIC’s ‘Le Freak’ is one of my favourite disco songs. Growing up I heard it a lot because my parents loved CHIC. I really admire Nile Rodgers and he was always high on my list to work with, so it was a big honour that he asked me to remix Le Freak. I tried to keep it true to the original and had a lot of fun remixing it. I'm very happy with the result and super proud to release this remix.” – Oliver Heldens
Effortlessly blending house with its old-school disco counterpart, Heldens uses the original vocal hooks and iconic string and guitar melodies from “Le Freak” and underlays a bouncy synth bassline and punchy house drums. The accompanying video features an introduction courtesy of Nile Rodgers in which he recounts his and Edwards formulation of the original tune. It continues with trippy animations of Heldens and CHIC band members being brought to life as the remix pounds through the speakers. Check it out now below and enjoy!
