The Edmonton duo of Megan James and Corin Roddick, better known as Purity Ring, are back with their first release since their groovy single “soshy” debuted in 2021. The uniquely quirky artists pull out all the stops on their newest extended play, graves.
Entirely written, produced, and mixed by the duo themselves, graves feels like their most deep-cutting, raw material to date. The title track sets the tone for the whole EP with its nostalgic, electronica vibes. Megan’s vocals take flight as her catchy hooks and glistening melodies are flawlessly executed to a tee. Still singing along to the first track, we moved on to “neverend,” a trap-influenced jam with swelling, dynamic production showcasing the duo’s more alternative side. Fast forward to “unlucky,” one of the more pop-forward tracks on the EP, where they utilize occasions of silence and rest (a hard thing to execute well as a producer) to create beautiful moments centered around James’s masterful vocals.
graves marks the first full release on Purity Ring’s own label The Fellowship. To add to the list of milestones, the duo embarked on their first North American tour in five years this May, staying on the road through the end of July.
