Norwegian artist Lido has been a favorite of ours here at TSIS and his exciting debut album Everything is an enjoyable listen from start to finish. The 23-year-old is a multi-instrumentalist who has expanded his creative abilities to include more of his own vocals on this introductory LP. Lido has made a name for himself at a young age by playing at multiple festivals, going out on various tours, and releasing EPs. There was a lot of hype surrounding Lido's album, and just before playing Coachella he announced Everything was complete and he would be debuting the project live at the festival. Now the full studio version of the LP is available and sounds even better than we had imagined.
Lido has made a name for himself through his experimental, signature sound that’s pushed boundaries and earned him collaborations with big names such as Chance The Rapper and Halsey. His catalogue of originals and remixes has gained him significant recognition and now he’s taken the step in putting his songwriting abilities on full display. While the tracklist doesn’t note any features, Everything draws contributions from artists such as Cashmere Cat, Vic Mensa, Towkio, and Lido's good friend Jaden Smith, whose voice told an essential part of the project's story.
Everything spans 11 tracks and follows a breakup narrative, focusing on the aftermath and how people evolve from an emotional standpoint. "This story is not about a girl," he says. "This is a story because of a girl." The offering packs a variety of strong emotions throughout, ranging from peaceful and soulful to frantic, nervous and angry.
The endeavor is filled with unexpected turns that pair dreamy live instrumentation with abrasive, glitchy elements that that surprisingly fit well together across several genres. Previously released singles "Crazy" and "Murder" gave us a glimpse into what Everything had in store for us, but the full project has packed a wider range of sounds than we expected.
While "Citi Bike" is a wild, booming hip-hop song that incorporates distorted vocals and a cinematic drop filled with bombastic synths, “You Lost Your Keys” is a heartfelt piano ballad with Lido’s own somber vocals. The two tracks couldn't sound any more different, but pair together perfectly.
This project is as emotional as it is wild and is one of the more diverse albums we've heard in a while. Lido has successfully transitioned from a catalogue of strong remixes to becoming a multi-talented artist who has continued growing with every release.
