Sylvan Esso Drop First New Music in 2 Years with “Sunburn”

|||

Sylvan Esso fans: your wait for new music is over! Today the band dropped a surprise single in the form of “Sunburn,” a scorching pop jam. “Sunburn” makes the duo’s first new music since 2020, and also kicks off a busy touring schedule for them, both as headliners and as support for ODESZA.

“Sunburn” revisits Sylvan Esso’s signature brand of eclectic synth pop. The zippy synth feels like bubbles popping around the understated bass line, forming the perfect runway for lead singer Amelia Meath’s gentle vocals. The tempo is gradually dialed up throughout, with Sylvan Esso settling into the groove during the back half of the song as the synth lines reach a frenzy.

Sylvan Esso described the message of the song as:

eating candy til you’re sick
riding your bike too fast down a hill
when you’re five years old and don’t want to get out of the water, and by the end you’re shivering and all your fingers are pruney and your lips are turned purple
an undertow that sneaks up unsuspectingly
the painful pulsing pink of swollen eyelids leftover after a day lying in the sun
plunging forward without time for second-guessing

You can check out “Sunburn” below. Enjoy!
