Donald Glover is a visionary with everything he’s involved with and did not hold back on his most ambitious live performances as Childish Gambino over the past couple years. In case you somehow missed it, Childish Gambino debuted his most recent album Awaken, My Love in the most epic way possible at the end of 2016. Everything around it was shrouded in mystery. He launched a new app with a countdown that revealed three camping shows called PHAROS that would be held in Joshua Tree without much more info.
When fans arrived they entered “phone-free spaces” including a dome, where Childish Gambino ultimately debuted his long-awaited album. Inside the dome awaited an incredible experience submerging fans into a fully subversive world. The dome incorporated 360-degree video projections creating a concert experience unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Then they decided to do it again and step things up a notch in New Zealand this past November.
Now they team behind the visual component of PHAROS has shared a behind-the-scenes mini documentary on how they created a fantasy world with a fully interactive real-time 3D rendering system powered by design studio 2n.
The event took place in the world’s largest inflatable dome and was produced by Glover and his management team at Wolf+ Rothstein, who brought on 2n and Weta Digital. They created a new world for each song using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.
“We find a lot of inspiration in the power of realtime rendering, and so instead of live-mixing videos, our operators controlled realtime 3D software; our systems still had knobs and faders, they just controlled things like cameras and characters, or the brightness of the stars or the the heaviness of the rain, so we could play along with the band and ride the dynamics of the music” – Alejandro Crawford, 2n co-founder
The show looks like one of the coolest audio / visual experiences we’ve ever seen and getting the behind the scenes look at how this project came together makes us wish we were there even more. Check out the full video above and see some incredible images of the renders and live show below. Enjoy!
