UK producer Joshua Mwebe, also known as Laxcity, has proven time and time again that he’s a forced to be reckoned with in the electronic music scene. Earlier this year, he both dropped the Disconnect EP and participated in the Brownies & Lemonade Beat Smash, alongside heavy-hitter Moore Kismet. Now, Laxcity is back with a two-disc mixtape, 2018 – 2021, that showcase some of his works over the last four years.
The first tape stays true to the Bristol beatmaker’s signature sound. He comes bursting with energy the from the very beginning with “Stroll“—a fun, glitchy track you can’t help but bounce to. “More Life” and “Thrills” keep you in high-spirits, embodying the vapor twitch sound that seems hard to pin down until you listen to these two tracks. If you’re into more experimental melodies, “Outcry” and “Revved Up” are unpredictable and jolting in the best way.
In juxtaposition to the first side, you can expect things to get a lot more chill in the second half. Each song blends beautifully into one another, as Laxcity flaunts his versatility. While he’s still able to incorporate creative and dynamic electronic elements, this portion of the mixtape can be best described as chill hip-hop beats. He even starts off this half with his producer tag, which is known to be used more in rap and trap than in other typical electronic genres.
Whatever route Laxcity takes in the remainder of 2021, one thing’s for sure: his production chops and sound selection are what’s going to keep setting him apart. And we can’t wait to see what he cooks up next. With that being said, the mixtape is worth listening for yourself and we know you’re going to love it. Enjoy!
