A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of offering a sneak peek of Varsity Star‘s new album More Than Anything. Now his album is officially out everywhere, and what a beauty it is.
Ranging from melodic to hard-hitting, this album shows Varsity Star dabbling in every step of the synth spectrum. Standout tracks include “Bedroom” and “Pipes“. The former showcases the producer’s ability to skillfully weave layers of dreamy melody while the latter is far grittier, with staccato chords starkly contrasting with ambient washes of synth.
In a press release, Varsity Star explained his goal and influences on the album.
For me, it’s about making emotional, encapsulated experiences that hit physically from the speakers. From Aphex Twin and the Miles Quintet, I learned a lot about exploring the tensions between those things, tearing music apart and putting it back together in one take. I found music that spoke to me in a real-life, non-theatrical, emotional way is something I’m always trying to get back to.
